We like introducing here an insider tip or two: Places that the professionals and insiders know, and love – but you maybe have not found yet. Deli Shop is one such gem.
The professionals’ place
Deli shop sells delicatessen but works as a bar for wine and aperitifs, too. The good people at Deli Shop distribute their top quality products to the renowned restaurants and wine bars of Prague, so they are well respected within the gastronomy community. But you can go there as well, and use the expert knowledge with which they shop at the Parisian market of Le Rungis, the Italian farms and other places we all love but visit only rarely, if at all. Make your day special with the best products you find here.
The French know how to bake. And we are happy to be able to purchase their creations in the middle of Prague.
The French flair we like
La Petite France is a boulangerie, ie a shop that sells baked goods. We like everything here because it is made really well: The baguettes that are properly French. The bread that makes everything seem right. The sandwiches you can buy and enjoy in the office, and the cakes you can bring home. And, the macarons, just because.
Asian cuisine is big in Europe and Prague is right now going through a time when there are new oned popping up almost every day. How can one tell which ones are good? We have a few tips for the tried, tested and great.
SaSaZu
One of the first Asian restaurants in the modern era of Prague’s gastronomy (opened in 2009) and still amongst the best. A rich fusion of several cuisines from the South East Asia, a menu that is always evolving and the impeccable décor. We keep coming back for more.
Some call Katsura the best Japanese restaurant in Prague. We like that they bring the lesser known Japanese dishes to our town. Are you a soup lover? They offer a range of soups that is much wider than what we usually see here.
Also, Katsura offers 7 types of bento boxes you can take away. Great!
This is another good place, part of the famous chain. Asian Fusion, central location, great brunches, a creative chef. The signature Buddha Bar dishes you know from all over the world, and several new ones. Not feeling like dining? Thy their bar with interesting cocktails.
Another succesful example of Asian cuisine with a twist. The influences vary from Japanese to Indian or Korean. We keep coming for their specials, ie a week of ramen or a collaboration with another restaurant that benefits both.
In a hurry? Love street food? Go here. Bánh mì is a type of Vietnamese sandwich that became famous worldwide. At Banh-Mi-Ba, they insist on freshness, no microwaving, no monosodium glutamate and many yummy, aromatic ingredients (lots of cilantro!) – perfect for a quick bite if you are on the run..
Tamarind Tree became famous for their pop-up presence at Prague’s markets and now run a small bistro at Vyšehradská street, near Sabores. It is a popular choice for lunches. We keep coming back for their noodles bit what people love are also their dim sum dumplings which are becoming very popular in Prague right now. They have several types and we like them for that.
Thai food from meats to desserts, also noodle and rice dishes from Laos or India. Another case where a place that started out amongst the first stays amongst the best. Did we mention their soups? You must thy those. They also have takeaway and delivery services.
This modern place features dishes from across Asia, utilizing as inspiration both street and comfort foods. The chefs Nyoman Purnata and Lee Chang have lived in Prague since 2008, and recently opened first restaurant, QQ Asian Kitchen.
Japanese food is not just sushi and perhaps a bowl of miso soup. That we can tell. If you want to know more about this colourful “genre”, you might want to try a real, good japanese restaurant that honors the traditions. Miyabi delivers on this front. And We like to see that the restaurant is always reflecting things like the New Year celebrations according to the Japanese, or the First of May celebrations.
Rosmarina is not your usual ship. Rosmarina is not your usual restaurant. Rosmarina is not your usual bistro. Rosmarina is not your usual sports venue. Um, what?
A Mix that Works
Rosmarina is one if the less usual places you might find in Prague. It is a sports complex where you can even try archery, and it is a big ship on the Vltava river that offers several restaurants where you can reward yourself after your sport efforts (or without, haha). There is Rosmarina restaurant that offers pleasant and comfortable cuisine based on the Italian traditions. Then there is their bistro offering grilled meats and quick fare such as soups. And they are working on something new too: A new spot dedicated to prawns in the making. We are very, very curious about this one!
Jan Punčochář is one of those chefs that have become celebrities per se: Even the folks who did not have the pleasure to eat his impeccable dishes know him, and regard him as an authority.
The new place you should see
Punčochář has been long working in the top restaurants in Prague, but it is only recently he became an owner: he rented this place for 25 years together with Jan Fidler (who co-owns a development company) and in the spring of 2019 he opened his restaurant for the first time.
Punčochář proudly and creatively cooks dishes that are built upon the local tradition, but are modern, interesting and can be compared to any of the top gastronomy experiences you can have. This restaurant does some things that are not usual in this tier though, the portions ale larger that you might expects in such an establishment, and you can do things that the Czechs did at their grandma’s such as finishing the sauce with a spoon because it is so good. We hope that we will be visiting this place for much longer than that 25 years!
Just when you thought you knew the new places in Prague, another one appears. That is what happened to us recently with the Food Lab.
A Modern Comfort
Food Lab has a very modern, simple interior that would not be out of place in any big city. We like that they offer breakfast (eggs, gluten free pancakes and much more), lunches (weekly specials – we like that their offer lighter options such as octopus but also more substantial dishes for the lovers of comfort food, such as duck), dinners (both Czech and Asian dishes are on the menu), and there is the brilliant idea of going for a weekend brunch and have galettes, salads, bao buns or perhaps the vegetable rolls. This blend works really well.
QQ Asian Kitchen shows that when you do things properly, with love and grit, you make a name for yourself. The rave reviews of this new-ish place speak for themselves.
A Friendly Place
QQ Asian Kitchen features dishes from across Asia, utilizing as inspiration both street and comfort foods. The chefs Nyoman Purnata and Lee Chang have lived in Prague since 2008, and have been in the restaurant business ever since. Their first restaurant, QQ Asian Kitchen, opened just recently, and Czechs started loving it almost immediately. We like the lighter options such as the marinated fish salad for the hot days but also the lovely soups for when it gets cold. If you like Asian cuisine, this one is highly recommended!
You may have heard of Vnitroblock the place: A hip zone in the ever-evolving Holešovice district that houses pop-up items, shops, exhibitions and other events. But there is a café there that stays.
Right in the middle
Right in the middle of the whole situation there is a café – you cannot overlook it, Vnitroblock is not that big. They offer top-shelf coffee, select cakes and homemade lemonades. It is a pleasant place to start your discovery of this whole industrial zone turned hip place, or a stroll of the formerly sad and drab Holešovice that seems to be glowing now. Try for yourselves.
In Prague, there are more bistros and “better” fast food places now than ever before (in the whole history of the city, that is). Good news. Let’s take a look at this one.
The good takeaway
Bistro L offers sandwiches and pasta dishes you can also take away to your home, office, or for a trip. You can have them on the spot too, though, so drop in for a quick lunch or a breakfast that gives you energy until lunchtime.
You can build your sandwich here, and we are happy to report you can do so with the top quality ingredients. Not just any ham, but the spanish jamón, not just any salami, but real chorizo. This is how we like to eat when we are in a hurry but want to avoid junk food!
Right now, there is a lot of coffee roasteries in Prague, and outside it. But these people started out before it became such a trendy thing to do.
Someone had to pave the way
Doubleshot was one of the first institutions regarding coffee, based in Prague. The people behind it traveled a lot and gained expert information on how to do that properly, and after some time, opened their own place. Můj šálek kávy it is. This direct trade coffee shop was the first place these people opened, and it seems to be always full! The whole neighbourhood gathers here, from moms with prams via hipsters to the older folks. The key is quite simple, as are many good things: This place offers the best quality only, and the owners been consistent in their pursuit of the impeccable coffee experience. We recommend visiting in the morning for the hearty yet modern breakfast that accompanies their beans perfectly.
